Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Palakkad.

When I joined this department in 2016 — just a year after the institute was founded — Civil Engineering occupied a small corner of a borrowed campus. Today, we run B.Tech., M.Tech., M.S., and Ph.D. programmes, operate laboratories with equipment few institutions in South India can match, and publish research that influences policy and practice in building materials, construction management, environmental, geotechnical engineering, transportation, structures, and water resources. That growth, in under a decade, reflects the energy and commitment of everyone who has been part of this department.

Our location in Kerala is not incidental to our work. The geotechnical and hydrological challenges of this region — lateritic soils, rainfall-induced landslides, the infrastructure needs of a rapidly developing state — are active threads running through our research. Our collaborations with Kerala PWD, National Highway Authority of India, the Kerala Highway Research Institute, and national agencies like DST-SERB and ISRO are grounded in problems that matter to the communities around us. When our researchers receive recognition such as the GYTI Appreciation Award for work on closed-loop sanitation, or when our faculty lead workshops that upskill practising engineers across the state, it is a reminder of why this department exists.

For prospective students, I would say this: IIT Palakkad is a young institution, and that is a genuine advantage. You will find faculty who are accessible, laboratories that are not overcrowded, and the real possibility of shaping the culture of a department that is still being built. If you bring curiosity and a willingness to work hard, this is an excellent place to do it.

I invite you to explore our programmes, meet our faculty, and reach out. We are always glad to hear from those who share our interest in building a more resilient and sustainable world.
